Steve Nieman has a wealth of experience in international and North American transportation and distribution including general management, strategic planning, and marketing. He formerly headed Mercer Management Consulting’s motor carrier, logistics service provider, and intermodal practices. Now he is a Principal at The Tioga Group, Inc. a management consultant with freight transportation and logistics expertise.

He has achieved a unique record of success as a leader in many sectors of transportation. He has used a pragmatic combination of applying analysis, understanding issues, and motivating human resources to succeed as a manager and consultant.

Mr. Nieman has held executive positions with major companies in the trucking, intermodal and railroad industries, including Consolidated Freightways, IU International, Leaseway Transportation, American President, and Burlington Northern. He has been Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, or General Manager of five companies, and has served as an officer or director of six industry associations.
  As a profit center general manager, Mr. Nieman has a history of successful implementation in a full range of business circumstances, ranging from start-ups through growth and maturity to orderly disposition of selected businesses. His strategic planning and business development activities have included trucking, freight forwarding, airfreight, assembly and distribution, ocean shipping, site evaluations and energy supply.
  As a management consultant, assignments have been for both the private and the public sector covering each surface mode of transportation with an emphasis on intermodal options, logistics and supply chain management, and logistic park development. Functional aspects have emphasized strategic and tactic planning, execution of operational, marketing, and development initiatives, analysis of market, competitive, operational and economic issues, reengineering of processes, mode and carriers selection and management thereof, and freight transportation considerations in industrial parks, ports, freight villages, and city land use.

Mr. Nieman holds a BA in mathematics and economics from Beloit College and an MBA from Stanford University.
